Misconceptions That Destroy a Meditation Practice

In regards to meditation, I often hear, “I’m doing it wrong! I can’t stop thinking.” And “it’s painful to sit with the emotions that arise”. That’s okay! That is totally normal and absolutely common in the beginning. So this week I’m diving into Tip Number 3 from “Beginners Guide to Meditation.”https://www.nicholeolsen.com/beginners-guide-to-meditation/ (allow for it to be a process by letting go of unrealistic expectations and misconceptions) and will be covering these two major misconceptions that can destroy a meditation practice.

Misconception #1- That you shouldn’t think.

The biggest misconception that will destroy a beginning meditator’s practice is the belief that you shouldn’t think while meditating. I challenge you to change this belief system and view meditation as a time to think. We have so much stimulation and rarely do we allow ourselves the time to organize, clear, and let go of all this stuff! Allowing the thoughts in, is exactly what is needed to become clear.  In the beginning you may spend more time thinking then finding your peace which is just part of the process.

Misconception #2- The way it makes you feel.

Another major misconception with meditation is that you are all blissed out and deeply connected. Let’s get real, when I finally dove into meditation, I was on my last straw. My life looked great on the outside but on the inside, I was a beautiful mess who couldn’t yet see the beautiful. Sitting in meditation was FACING self hatred, wounds, truths, and everything I stuffed for years. Let it be a time to feel deeply, allow yourself to FEEL and HEAL! It isn’t always pretty in the beginning but remember, it gets better the more you “sit in your shit”. Let it be the fertilizer for your flowers to grow. The bliss comes when they bloom.

This is me in a not so good space. It’s not my best “image” of course but it’s real, truthful, and raw. By allowing myself time in meditation to think/process and feel, I was able to heal and move forward instead of being stuck. My wish is for you to do the same.

Always feel free to ask questions.

Namaste,

Nichole
